The Volunteers

The alarm sounds off and they must go,
Whether sun and heat or sleet and snow.
For there is trouble somewhere in town,
A neighbors house may be burning down.
Around the country these calls go out,
Someone in need has made the shout.
Calling help in day or night.
And now they muster for the fight.
A fire, a fall, a friend is ill,
A wreck, an injury, or a bad spill.
Has called to work these volunteers,
These men and women that face the fear.
That a friend may die, a neighbor weep
That a child is hurt and is in need.
They answer the call to help their friends,
Giving themselves, their hands they lend.
Their numbers not known across the land,
For they are a mighty band
Of brothers and sisters who face each day,
The call of help, despair, dismay.

A Firefighter's Lament

My eyes could not believe,
The terror that they saw.
Twin Towers in the city,
Burning, about to fall.
I watched with fists clenched in rage
As the fight was under way.
My brethren fighting bravely
So many they tried to save.
But alas, the Towers came crashing down
A thunderous roar it made,
As friends and family from many towns
Beneath the rubble lay.
But I will always remember
And never will forget
That black day in September
That burning smoking pit.
And though I never met those
That perished deep inside.
I hope to hold always close
Their courage, love, and pride.

Of All The Things I've Lost In Life

I Miss My Mind The Most!

 

 

The Foe

Unbearable heat from the raging fire,
Consuming all that it desires.
They face this foe of flame and heat,
A formless foe that lives and breathes.

For as it grows, it feeds and yearns,
To devour anything that burns.
It has its purpose, its desire, its will.
It longs to destroy and it will kill.

They fight the foe with all they are,
A fire team, tried and hard.
A squad of brothers that live and fight,
To defeat the foe and take its life.

They will not fail nor will they quit,
They are prepared and well equipped.
For their lives are focused and their desire strong,
They never back off, they attack it head on. 

And toward the end the fire dies out, 
The fight complete, a total route.
The team relaxes and cleans its gear.
To fight again when the foe appears.
